Rakhi / Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with pomp and gaiety by Hindus in different parts of India. in 2009 Rakhi will be celebrated on 5th August 2009. On the festival of Rakhi/Raksha Bandhan, sisters would conduct an aarti and apply tilak on their brothers' forehead, before tying the Rakhi on their brothers' wrist. All the puja items are beautifully arranged on a plate, which is called puja thali.

The materials commonly placed in the pooja thali may include a diya (earthen lamp) for performing the aarti, sweets, roli (sacred color used for tilak), rice (for Akshat) and Rakhi. The beautifully decorated Rakhi thalis gives an impression of the sister's love and care for her brother.

Types of Rakhi Thali

Floral Thali
Place the puja items including diya, rice and roli and sweetmeat in a bronze or stainless steel thali in which petals of flowers are arranged as the base. You can decorate the puja thali with an assortment of fresh colorful flowers. Either fill the entire thali with the flowers, or decorate them only on the thali's rim. The thali can be decorated by single color flowers also. Instead of an entire flower, make use of only the petals of the flowers, so that the thali looks pretty.

Dry-fruits Thali
Decorate your puja thali for Rakhi with dry fruits like cashew nuts, chestnuts, raisins, cocoa nut, pistachio or almond. One after another, many circles of different dry- fruits can be made in the thali, which gives a colorful look. Another idea is to make an entire base of mixed dry fruits in the thali, and then place the puja items. For the purpose, you may make use of a stainless steel thali.

Roli-Turmeric Thali
Roli-turmeric thali is one of the basic types of puja thalis for Rakha Bandhan. Take a bronze thali. Now, mix roli with turmeric powder, so that it becomes a thin paste. The red and yellow combination of these two would give a traditional look to your pooja thali. Smear the thali with the fresh roli-turmeric paste. After the paste is dried, place the puja items in the thali, including diya, sweetmeat and rice.

Collage Thali
You may make use of different colorful paper cuttings your Rakhi puja thali decoration. Although the thali will wear a look of collage painting, it is definite that it would look unique and catch the immediate attention of your brother. Make use of paper cut outs from a magazine or newspaper, for the purpose. The papers used in such decoration could be plain papers with single color or the printed papers containing some or other pictures on them.

Choco-Toffee Thali
This Rakhi, come up with unique ideas for the puja thali decoration and please your brother, on the auspicious occasion. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, then go for choco-toffee thali decoration. Divide the area of the thali by drawing lines of chocolates and toffees. In every division, place one puja item. This would look very different from the traditional puja thalis.

Sweets Rakhi Thali
Sweets can be used as decorative items for pooja thali. Either put full pieces of the sweets in a decorative manner in the thali, or put small pieces of sweets by cutting them into different shapes. You can also use a combination of both the ideas. Place the puja items in between the sweets.

Cartoon Rakhi
In such types of Rakhis, the cartoon characters are prominent designs over the Rakhi thread. These characters are generally popular cartons like Micky mouse, Donald duck, Tweety, Mogli, Casper, Shaktiman or any other character popular among the children. These kinds of Rakhis are meant for kids.

Sandalwood Rakhi
These Rakhis are made by using sandalwood pieces in various decorative forms. There may be small animals, flowers or some idols made of sandalwood. Sometimes sandalwood beads are also used to give an ethnic look to the Rakhis. The sweet smell of sandalwood also adds extra freshness to the Rakhi festival.

Musical Rakhi
Musical Rakhis are those which play special kind of music when touched. These consist of sensors which get active and play melodious or surprising music. These Rakhis are also a craze amongst children.

Floral Rakhi
These are the Rakhis which have a touch of ancientness. These Rakhis give a complete traditional look. Use of different colorful small and big flowers makes such Rakhis extremely beautiful. These Rakhis are naturally filled with sweet fragrance.

Zari Rakhi
These Rakhis are made of Zari threads. Apart using the zari as thread, it also uses it in making the central motif of the Rakhi. The zari is generally silver or golden therefore it appears shiny and gives a very royal look.

Resham Rakhi
Resham Rakhis or Reshami Rakhis are those Rakhis which are made by Resham (silk) threads. Such Rakhis are soft in touch and look bright. All kinds of Resham Rakhis, be it a simple Dori or a heavily decorated one, are well-liked by each age-group.

Mouli
A special kind of thread is used in Hindu Dharma rituals, for tying onto the wrists of the participants of any Hindu rites as an auspicious symbol. This special thread is also known as 'Kalava'. This 'Mouli' is also used as Rakhi because of its auspiciousness.

Gold-Siver coated Rakhi
When Rakhis are prepared by using coatings of the precious metals like silver and gold then they automatically give a royal look. At times, these metals are also used in the different shapes like flowers, Indian Gods and Goddesses and even beads while preparing the Rakhis. These Rakhis also have keepsake value.

Shree-Om Rakhi
Rakhis containing the symbols of Hindu Dharma, like the 'Shree' sign, the 'Om' sign and the 'Swastika' signs are also in demand. Such Rakhis leave a religious impression. So, these Rakhis are especially popular among the old people.

Ram Rakhi
Sometimes Rakhis are made of simple silk threads. They are very simple Doris only with no decorations at all. Just a flower made of same thread in the middle of the Dori. .

Beads Rakhi
The Rakhis that have beads embedded into their threads or embedded on top of the Rakhi base in the middle of the Rakhi thread are put into this category. Such Rakhis give a unique tribal appearance.

Currency Note Rakhi
Such Rakhis have different denominations of currency notes like Rupees or Dollars attached to them. These currency notes can be made of plastic or even real. These Rakhis are simply used for fun.

Stones Rakhi
The Rakhis that are made by using the pieces of precious and semi-precious stones like opal, emerald, ruby or topaz are called stone Rakhis. A Rakhi decorated with various kinds of glittering stone pieces looks just marvelous.

How to Make a Rakhi? Make Rakhi at home.

Materials Required

* 1 Silk Thread Reel (color of your choice, preferably red or green)
* 1 Cotton Thread Reel (matching to the silk reel color)
* 1 Toothbrush (an old one)
* Scissors
* Glue
* 10-12 small Artificial Pearls

Method

* Take the silk thread reel and cut its 20-25 pieces, each one around 25 inches long.
* Hold all the pieces in such a way that both of their ends meet each other and then fold the entire bundle of threads at the mid point.
* Take the cotton reel and tie the bundle with the help of cotton thread just 4-5 inches below the mid point.
* Divide the longer portion of the thread bundle into two equal parts.
* Plait both the divided portions separately and tie a small piece of cotton thread at both the ends leaving a margin of 2 inches. Thus the longer portion makes the string part of Rakhi.
* The smaller part of the Rakhi is still in loops because of the fold. Take the scissors and cut the loops right at its center. This will make the central part of the Rakhi.
* Take the toothbrush and comb that central part in all the directions in such a manner that a circle of the tiny threads is prepared.
* Both the ends of the strings must also be brushed. Brushing the threads will make it even softer and give it a feathery look.
* Finally stick the small pearls on the central part of the Rakhi with the help of glue.

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated every year on 'Shravan Purnima' (Full Moon Day of the Hindu month of Shravan), which generally falls in the month of August. On the auspicious day of Rakhi, sisters wake up in the morning, take bath, offer prayers to the Almighty and visit their brothers to perform the rituals of Rakhi. The ritual of Raksha Bandhan essentially includes tying of sacred thread by the sisters, on their brothers' wrist. "We began our strike last night and will continue indefintiely till our demands are met," secretary, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) Dr Anil Dudhabhate said today.

There will be no inconvenience to the outpatients as the doctors are consulting with the OPD patients outside the hospitals, he said.

"I like it here, it is really nice. But I will miss my old friends back in Bandra. Maybe I will go and visit them once a while," he said.

Azharuddin and his family moved into a one-bedroom, 250-square-foot apartment with electricity and running water. It is a short drive from the posh suburb of Juhu.

Normal life was thrown out of gear in the financial capital today by heavy rains that led to waterlogging in several areas and hit the movement of air and rail traffic.

The metropolis experienced an incessant downpour since the wee hours, inundating many areas across the city, civic officials said.

Traffic at the airport was affected with the air traffic control stopping runway operations owing to poor visibility at 9:46am, a spokesperson of Mumbai International Airport Ltd (Mial), the company that is developing the airport and operates it, said.

Operations on the runway resumed at about 10:15am, but visibility was restricted to 800 metres owing to which flight services were affected, the spokesperson said.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) leading distance education open university started 100 community colleges

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Saturday started 100 community colleges to bring a "learning revolution" among under-privileged students across the country.

A unique initiative, community colleges will impart education through private-public partnership to underprivileged students using the unutilised capacities of educational institutions across the country. The colleges will commence their courses from the coming academic session.

The students who attend these colleges shall acquire associate degrees, which will ensure them a lateral entry to the bachelor's programme for a formal graduation degrees. Initially 100 out of 800 applicant colleges have been selected to run the community colleges. Most of them are private institutions.

IGNOU's role will be accreditation, quality monitoring and evaluation, certification and course development. Each selected college has an average capital investment of Rs.150 million including land, building, equipment and other facilities.

The institutions have also tied up with local industries, both small and heavy. Ten to 15 teachers will be put on rolls in each college to conduct the classes for the enrolled students. Apart from use of information technology, there will also be personal contact and counselling to develop sound teaching-learning processes.

Richard Watson of The BBC, in a programme telecast this week and available on YouTube.com about Mumbai attacks 26/11 made the startling claim that local links may have been associated with the terror attacks in Mumbai between November 26 and 29. Richard Watson in his BBC report claimed spotters on the ground kept the terrorists’s handlers in Pakistan informed about the position of police forces during the three-day siege of Mumbai.
According to Richard Watson, Indian security agencies investigating the attacks have insisted that there was no local links in the Mumbai attacks on 26/11.

Hotel Prosser’s (Tel - 2284-1715), 2-4 Henry Rd, has decent rooms with common bath ranging from Rs 500/700 to Rs 850 for much nicer rooms. Some rooms have an ocean view.
India (2283-3769), 3rd Floor, 1/39 Kamal Mansion, Arthur Bunder Rd, has small, partitioned rooms with common bath and no windows for Rs 500/600 and rooms with a sea view for Rs 600/700.

The Sea Shore (Tel 2287-4237), above the India Hotel on the 4th floor, is a decent value with rooms for 500/600. The rooms facing the sea for Rs 600/800 are better than the other rooms.
Below the Hotel Indian is the Hotel Sea Lord (2284-5392), with windowless small rooms for Rs 500/600 and rooms with a seaview for Rs 600/700. All these places are about the same.

Hotel Lawrence (Tel - 2284-3618), 3rd floor, 33 As Baba Marg, down a side road in back of the Prince of Wales Museum off K Dubash Marg, is a small, quiet, place with clean rooms for Rs 450/550 and Rs 800 for a triple. It is a good value and usually full (has only six rooms. Recommended.

Salvation Army Red Shield Hotel (Tel - 2284-1824), 30 Mereweather Rd, behind the Taj, has rooms for Rs 700/1000 (meals included) and dorm beds for Rs 150 (with meals Rs 160). It is the least expensive place in town. You have to reserve a room in advance. Dorm beds are first come, first served, so it is a good idea to arrive by the 9 am checkout time. Have left luggage facilities for Rs 50 per day.

Bentley’s Hotel (2284-1474; fax 2287-1846; Email: bentleyshotel@hotmail.com; Web Site: http://www.bentleyshotel.com), 17 Oliver Rd, is an older place with well-maintained rooms with common bath for Rs 800/1085 and a room large enough in which to hold a cricket match for Rs 1250. A/C Rs 200 extra. It is a popular place. Breakfast included with the price. Rooms have character with balconies and colonial furniture.. Accept credit cards.

It is an interesting place and a good value. It has an excellent restaurant. Thalis Rs 150. It is a well-managed place and it is worth staying just for the experience. Govindas offers a wide variety of choices. Most guests like to settle for the thali which gives you a wide varity of flavours and dishes. There are sabjis, rice, dal, salad and so many other things in the thali option. This is really a sumptuous meal which leaves you very satisfied.
Other than that one can have the pizza or the burger, a juice or even try the cakes especially made without egg. Try the chappatis, they will melt in your mouth. The bread that are available here are unique in their flavour. They always leave you asking for more. So go on try out a meal at Govinda´s and you are sure to come back for more.

Michael Jackson's death Thursday in California prompted broadcasters from Sydney to Seoul — where the news came early Friday — to interrupt morning programs, while fans remembered a "tortured genius" whose squeals and sliding moves captivated a generation and who sparked global trends in music, dance and fashion.

Even world leaders weighed in. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called it "lamentable news," though he criticized the media for giving it so much attention. Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who had met Jackson, said: "We lost a hero of the world."

Within minutes of Jackson's arrival by ambulance at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, people began arriving by the hundreds. A crowd remained at sunset, hours later, some dancing while passing cars blasted out Jackson tunes. A group of entrepreneurs sold T-shirts reading, "In Loving Memory of Michael Jackson."

As word of his death spread, MTV switched its U.S. programming to play videos from Jackson's heyday. Radio stations began playing marathons of his hits. Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital. In New York's Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.

"No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow," Michael Harris, 36, of New York City, read from a text message a friend had sent him. "It's like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died."

"My heart is heavy because my idol died," said Byron Garcia, security consultant at a Philippine prison who organized the famous video of 1,500 inmates synchronized dancing to "Thriller." The video has had 23.4 million hits on YouTube.

Garcia said the inmates in Cebu will hold a tribute for Jackson on Saturday with their "Thriller" dance and a minute of prayer.

In Bogota, Colombia, a 24-year-old tattoo artist named Michael Tarquino said his parents named him after Jackson. He recalled growing up with electricity rationing for hours at a time and waiting for the power to return.

"When the light came back on I would play my Michael Jackson LP, and I'd stand at the window and sing along," he said.

‘True superstar’
Japanese fans were always among Jackson's most passionate supporters, and news of his death came as a huge shock. Michiko Suzuki, a music critic who met Jackson several times in the 1980s, said the country was likely to be mourning for some time.

Jackson also had a huge fan base in Seoul, South Korea, where his style and dance moves were widely emulated by Korean pop stars.

"He is my master and the prime mover to make me dance," pop star Rain told the South Korean sports and entertainment daily Ilgan Sports. "Even though he is dead, he is an eternal performer."

In central Mexico City, Jackson impersonator Esteban Rubio, 30, organized an impromptu tribute to the musical star.

"I feel sad, as if a part of my life were torn away," said Rubio, who wore a black fedora and aviator-style sunglasses and held a bouquet of sunflowers. "He changed the world. ... His legend begins today."

In Sydney, where Jackson married second wife Debbie Rowe in 1996, a celebrity publicist who was a wedding guest and worked on Jackson's Australian tour that year described him as a "tortured genius."

"He was very gentle, very quiet, very shy," Di Rolle told Sky News television. "He was a very complicated, strange man, women loved him and men loved him too. It's such a sad day, a very sad day."

"I had tears in my eyes when I found out," Charles Winter, 19, from Adelaide, Australia, told The Associated Press. It doesn't matter if you're 40, 60 or 20, his music appeals to everyone."

In Malaysia, a drink mixing soy milk with strips of dark jelly is named after Jackson's "Black or White" song, and locals just ask for "Michael Jackson" or "MJ" when they order.

Yet the government nearly banned Jackson's 1996 HIStory concert tour for being too raunchy for the conservative, predominantly Islamic nation.

IT specialist Ivan Ho, 48, said Jackson's success went to his head.

"He is a weirdo," he said. "With the kind of money he has, he could have done much more for charity" rather than have cosmetic surgery.

The international arts community mourned the loss of a unique performer.

Peter Kam, a prominent pop composer in Hong Kong, said he learned from Jackson the importance of a catchy melody.

"Every one of his songs is easy to remember. He was great at leaving a deep impression in a simple way," Kam said.

In Brazil, movie director and musician Felipe Machado called Jackson "perhaps the best performer that ever existed." Singer-composer and former Culture Minister Gilberto Gil also expressed his sorrow.

The Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) will enable students to view the results of the secondary school certificate (SSC, Std X) examination online at its MS-CIT centres across the state. The results will be declared on June 25.

The Maharashtra SSC results can be seen online at over 5,000 MS-CIT centres across the state at no cost. According to a statement issued by the MKCL, the state education board has made special provisions to make the SSC results accessible from the MKCL’s centres.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, popularly known as IIT Bombay or IITB, is an autonomous university located in Powai, in north central Mumbai (formerly Bombay). It is the second-oldest campus of the Indian Institutes of Technology system and the largest National Institute in the state of Maharashtra. IIT Bombay has emerged as the most favoured destination for students amongst the 15 IITs with 54, 50, 46 and 52 students in the top 100 at the IIT-JEE opting for IIT Bombay in the years 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2005 respectively. Its record placement figures and location within the country's financial & entertainment capital are factors leading to this.

IIT Bombay was the second IIT to be established in 1958 with assistance from UNESCO and with funds contributed by the Soviet Union. UNESCO agreed to provide equipment and technical experts mainly from the Soviet Union, while the Government of India accepted the responsibility for all other expenses including the cost of the building project and recurring expenses.
IIT Bombay Main Building

The site chosen for the institute was Powai, eighteen miles (29 km) from the city of Bombay (Mumbai), with an area of 550 acres (2.2 km2) which was given by the then Bombay State Government. While construction was being completed, the first academic session of the Institute opened on July 25, 1958, in its temporary home at the Synthetic and Art Silk Mills Research Association (SASMIRA) building in Worli (Bombay) with 100 students. These students were selected from over 3,400 applicants for admission to the first year undergraduate programmes in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering. One of the main objectives of establishing the Institute was to develop facilities for studies in a variety of specialised engineering and technological sciences. The need for establishing adequate facilities for postgraduate studies and research was kept uppermost in mind in the founding years.

While the Institute was functioning provisionally at Worli, an effort was made to expedite the progress of the building project at its permanent location. When Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of the Institute at Powai on March 10, 1959, water and electric supply lines were just being laid and one approach road to the site was under construction.

Today, nearly fifty years later, IIT Bombay continues to contribute significantly to the advancement of science and technology in India in a number of ways. It has produced world class engineers and scientists, and alumni of IIT Bombay are achieving success in various capacities as entrepreneurs, managers, technocrats, consultants and advisers, and as faculty members and researchers, in India and abroad.It is frequently rated as one of the best technical institutes in the world.

The IIT Bombay campus is located at Powai, a suburb in north western Mumbai, between the Vihar and Powai lakes. It was designed by Vanu G. Bhuta for Messers G.M. Bhuta & Associates. The closest railway stops to IIT Mumbai on the Mumbai Suburban Railway are Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli, both on the Central line. The four main entrances to the campus are the Main Gate, the Middle Gate (now closed for security reasons), the Y-Point Gate (also called the Market Gate) and the Lake Side Gate. The Main Gate is the only one which is open 24 hours a day, while the Y-Point Gate is open only between 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The campus is divided into clusters of buildings. The academic area chiefly comprises the Main Building, various Departmental annexures and auditoria. All department annexures are connected by a corridor named Infinite Corridor. Beyond the Convocation Hall lies the hostels (with the exception of Hostel 10, which is abutting the departmental annexure). The hostels are numbered from 1 through 13, with Hostel 10 (under-graduate and post-graduate) and Hostel 11 (post-graduate) specially reserved for women. Tansa House is a housing complex exclusively for the single male project staff. It is the smallest hostel in IIT Bombay with 128 rooms. The Tulsi House is meant for married research scholars. Apart from these, few students also reside in Type -1 quarters, Vihar House, QIP quarters and DRDO building which are situated in the campus.

Due to its proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the campus is extremely clean, green and mostly untouched by the pollution of the rest of the city. The proximity of the campus to the national park has also led to occasional sightings of panthers and Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) crocodilians along the banks of Lake Powai. A popular weekly newspaper Planet Powai reports events and happenings of this campus regularly.

The institute has a swimming pool; football, hockey and cricket grounds; and tennis, basketball, squash and volleyball courts. It also has a Students' Activity Center (SAC) for various cultural and other extracurricular activities. In addition to these facilities the campus also houses two high schools, one of which is a Kendriya Vidyalaya and the other is called IIT Campus School.

Cultural activities like dramatics also mark an important feature in the life of a student of IIT Bombay. Many students are very passionate about the annual inter-hostel Performing Arts Festival (PAF).

The annual cultural festival Mood Indigo is held in the month of December and is the largest of its kind in Asia. The most attractive feature of this 4-day event are the competitions, exhibitions, games and musical concerts.

The college festival is organised, financially managed and conducted entirely by the students of this Institute. Both these festivals are sponsored by various companies and even some of the public banks.

These festivals receive huge sums of money from their sponsors This is one of the primary reasons for these festivals being able to afford the organisation of various big events.

Apart from these festivals various other engineering streams based festivals are also being organized to motivate students towards Science and Technology like Radiance, Zephyr, Azeotropy, Padarth, Aagomani and recently, Aakaar.

Organization

At the institutional level, IIT Bombay is governed by a Board of Governors with a Chairman nominated by the Visitor, the Director as a member and the Registrar as secretary. Besides this, there are four persons having specialised knowledge or practical experience in respect of education, engineering or science nominated by the Council. Two professors are nominated by the Senate. Additionally, one technologist or industrialist of repute is nominated by the Government of each of the States of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

For all academic matters, the Senate is the authority having control and responsibility for the maintenance of standards of instruction, education and examinations and all other allied academic matters. The Senate is mainly constituted of all the professors of the Institute and the Director is the Chairman.

The key people in the execution of the Institute's activities are the Director and Deputy Director who are assisted by Dean (Research and Development), Dean (Planning), Dean (Students Affairs), Dean (Academic Programmes) and Dean (Resources Development), and the Heads of the Departments, Centres and Schools. The Administration is managed by the Registrar, with senior administrative officers being assigned for specific areas such as Estate Management, Materials Management, Personnel Management, Finance and Accounts, and Academic Affairs.

The Academic Office of the institute exists to facilitate, initiate and co-ordinate the academic work of the Institute, particularly the teaching and assessment of students. The Head of the Academic Office is the Dean of Academic Programmes, who is a senior professor of the Institute. The Dean is helped by a permanent administrative set up headed by a Deputy Registrar (Academic). Academic Office closely interacts with the Dean of Student Affairs (DOSA), who looks after all non-academic problems of students. The DOSA, as the ex-officio President of the Student Gymkhana, coordinates various co-curricular activities of the students .

IIT Bombay Heritage Fund (IITBHF) and IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA) are the two official organizations for alumni of IIT Bombay. The alumni website at http://www.iitbombay.org was amongst the earliest alumni websites for an Indian university. The IIT Bombay Heritage Fund (IITBHF) is a public charitable organization under US Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), whose mission is to fund and promote education and research among students, faculty and alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. The IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA), registered under Section 25 of the Indian Companies Act, 1956, works for strengthening the connections between alumni, enhance ties to their alma mater, and provide services to alumni.

As the official alumni association, IITBAA plays a key role in building the alumni network and supporting the local Chapters which are all over the world, from Bangalore to Boston to the Bay Area. IITBAA staff work with IITBHF volunteers in maintaining the alumni website and the Alumni Directory which allows 30,000-plus IIT Bombay alumni to stay in touch with each other and with their alma mater.

As the Alumni Fund of IIT Bombay, IITBHF has raised over $20 Million for IIT Bombay over the past decade, and helped fund major infrastructure projects and new schools on campus including the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology (KReSIT), Shailesh J. Every year, IIT Bombay awards degrees, B.Tech, M.Tech, Dual Degree (B.Tech and M.Tech), M.Mgmt and Ph.D to more than 1,000 students. The undergraduate students at IIT Bombay are selected through the Joint Entrance Examination of the IITs. At a given time, the campus is home to more than 6,000 people, comprising of students, professors and non academic staff.

Each year, students finishing at the top of their class are awarded Institute Silver Medals at the convocation Ceremony. Students finishing with the highest GPA in the entire institute are awarded President of India Gold Medals.

Research and development activities

Faculty members from IIT Bombay undertake industry sponsored research and consultancy projects that are made available through the institute. These are funded by various national agencies like the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Electronics, Department of Space, Aeronautical Development Agency, Department of Atomic Energy, and Oil and Natural Gas Commission. Many are also working on missions of national importance. A few projects are also being funded by international agencies. Typically in one year, there are about 400 on-going sponsored projects. The sponsored research has ushered in intense research activity leading to the formation of active research groups and has helped in the creation of modern research facilities in key areas.

Consultancy has been a major avenue of interaction between faculty and industry. Consultancy work provides an opportunity to tackle live industrial problems and enhance professional expertise. There are collaborative and consultancy projects with many industries, some abroad. About 700 to 800 projects are executed every year.

The office of the Dean (R&D) provides the necessary liaison with industry and sponsoring agencies. The office helps industry to identify faculty expertise and institutional facilities, and assists faculty in identifying industry problems.

The Departments and Centres have well equipped research labs and workshop facilities. There are also a number of central facilities such as the Central Library, Central Workshop, and Printing Press. Many new research facilities have been acquired or developed in the last few years. One of the most important of them is the Computer Centre which started functioning in 1986 with facilities which have been continuously updated. The Computer Aided Design Centre with its own mini computers and work stations, supplemented by additional computing facilities, caters to CAD activity in Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering. Research groups like VLSI Design, CAD/CAM also have computing facilities which are accessible to other departments for development activities. Important experimental facilities set up by various departments include laboratories for robotics, biotechnology, microelectronics, microprocessor applications, telematics, remote sensing, low temperature physics and aerodynamics.

The original seven islands of Bombay consisted of twenty-two hills. Most of them were razed to fill in the shallows to connect the islands. The hills still standing today are:

There are 3 hill ranges with the city limits. The Ghatkopar Hills are present near the station of Ghatkopar. The hill range runs parallel to the Central Railway track and is inhabited by slums. During the monsoon season, landslides are common. The Trombay Hills occupy a large portion of Trombay on the eastern part of the city.The highest point of the peak is about 302m above sea level.

The Powai Hills are present north of the city. The Borivali National Park occupies most of the region. The Vihar and Tulsi Lakes are present within the hills. The highest point of the metropolis, at 450 metres, is located in this region.

All India Engineering Entrance Examination(AIEEE) -AIEEE Information

All India Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by Indian Institute of Science and Technology India is one of biggest enterance exams.

The Programme of Action (PoA), 1992 under the National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986 envisaged conduct of a common entrance examination on all India basis for admission to professional and technical programs in the country. For admission to Engineering and Architecture/Planning programs, Government of India vide Resolution dated 18th October 2001 has laid down a Three - Exam Scheme (JEE and AIEEE at the National Level and the State Level Engineering Entrance Examinations (SLEEE) for State Level Institutions - with an option to join AIEEE). This takes care of varying admission standards in these programs and helps in maintenance of professional standards. This also solves problems of overlaps and reduces physical, mental and financial burden on students and their parents due to multiplicity of entrance examinations.

Eligibility for All India Engineering Entrance Examination:

The minimum academic qualification for admission through AIEEE is a pass in the final examination of 10+2 (Class XII) or its equivalent. Those appearing in 10+2 (Class XII) final or equivalent examination may also appear in AIEEE for consideration of provisional admission.

For B.E. and B.Tech courses through AIEEE one needs to have physics and Mathematics and any one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science and Biology. For B.Arch or B. Planning one needs to have mathematics as compulsory subject with at least 50 % marks in aggregate at 10+2 level.

Exam Details AIEEE:

All India Engineering Entrance Examination consists of two papers. The first paper would consist of three parts of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of equal weightage with objective type questions for BE/B.Tech courses and 2nd paper would comsisit of Mathematics, Aptitude Test and Drawing for B. Architecture and B. Planning. The Aptitude Test is designed to evaluate candidate's perception, imagination, observation, creativity and architectural awareness.

Andhra Bank was registered on 20 November 1923 and commenced business on 28 November 1923 with a paid up capital of Rs 1.00 lakh and an authorised capital of Rs 10.00 lakhs. Andhra Bank crossed many milestones[clarification needed] and the Bank's Total Business as on 30.06.2008 stood at Rs.83,256 Crores with a Clientele base over 1.74 Crores.

Andhra Bank is rendering services through 2139 Business Delivery Channels consisting of 1371 branches, 66 Extension Counters, 38 Satellite Offices and 664 ATMs spread over 21 States and 2 Union Territories as at the end of June, 2008. All Branches of Andhra Bank are 100% computerized, 1186 units viz., 1101 Branches, 68 Extension Counters, 15 Service Centres networked under Cluster Banking solution and providing "Any Branch Banking(ABB)". Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) Facility and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) facility has been introduced in 723 Branches.

To provide value-added services to Customers, Andhra Bank has set up its own 664 ATMs as on 30.06.2008. Of which 03 Mobile ATMs and two with Biometric access. Besides, ATM sharing arrangements with several Banks including SBI group, IDBI Bank, UTI Bank, HDFC Bank, Indian Bank and others under National Financial Network Switch covering 24856 ATMs.

Andhra Bank is migrating to "Centralized Core Banking Solution". 118 Branches have already migrated to CBS. It is proposed to cover 550 branches of Andhra Bank by September 2009. This will benefit the customers, who will have access to banking and financial services anytime, anywhere through multiple delivery channels. Andhra Bank is a pioneer in introducing Credit Cards in the country in 1981 .

MAT Enterance Exam by AIMA - Improtant Questions and Answers

Q. When & how many times MAT is conducted in a year? Qualification & percentage needed for it.

A. Mat is usually conducted 4 times in a year in February, May, September and December. The minimum qualification for appearing in MAT is graduation in any discipline from any recognized University or equivalent recognized degree. A final year student in any undergraduate (i.e. B.A, B.Sc., B.Com., B.Tech., etc) can also appear provisionally. Usually, there is a minimum percentage requirement in graduation, which is different for different MIs/University. For this refer to the prospectus of the particular MIs/University.

Q. How many Management Institutes participate in MAT. Do they keep on changing or remain the same? Is there a same admission criterion for each & every Institute? Are they recognized, by AICTE? Do they have hostel facility? What about the total fee?

A. The number of participating Management Institutes may vary. The number of MI’s keeps on changing from test to test. Admission criteria for every institute is different. All MIs participating in MAT are either AICTE approved or affiliated to some Universities, for further information you may contact the MIs/Universities of your choice. The list of various Management Institutes /Universities is available in MAT bulletin along with the admission notification. It may be worthwhile to go through the brochure of the Management Institutes for detailed information.

Q. What is the cost of the Bulletin? The DD, which is to be made, should be in whose favor?

A. At Present the cost of a MAT bulletin is Rs. 980/- by cash across the AIMA, New Delhi counter/ Select UTI Bank branches/ AIMA Nodal Centres all over India and Rs.1050/- against Demand Draft (DD) by post. DD should be made in favor of AIMA-CMS, payable at New Delhi.

Q. What is the validity of MAT score?

Q. What is the last date of submitting filled in MAT OMR Form?

A. Last date for submission is mentioned in the MAT bulletin. The last date also appears in the notification released by AIMA in various national & regional newspapers.

A. For applying to MI’s it is suggested that the prospectus of the MI’s opted should be bought.

Q. Is MAT held all over the country what about a person living abroad? Can he/she apply for it?

Q. Do we get a separate Admit Card for appearing in MAT?

A. Candidate has to download his/her admit card from aima website 7 days before the Test Date with the registration form number. No separate admit card is mailed to candidate.

Q. Is there any age bar for it? Any Job experience required, to appear in MAT?

A. There is no age bar. Job experience is not necessary.

Q. Is appearance in MAT necessary for getting admission into PGDM/ MBA programme ?

* Mechanical Engineering Department

The Mechanical Engineering department at VJTI and workshops are housed in the extensions outflanking the main institute on the north and was established in 1946. The department has facilities in Metallurgy, Dynamics, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Automobile, Heat Engines, Robotics and Automation, CAD/CAM/CAE, Mechanical Measurement s and Fluid Mechanics and Workshops in Machine, Smithy, Carpentry, Filing and Welding. All laboratories have testing facilities. The department also provides certification for several activities on behalf of the government.

* Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department

The Electrical Engineering department at VJTI is situated in the south wing and an extension building is constructed in the rear and was established in 1947. The Siemens High Voltage laboratory is accommodated in a special block in the south wing. The electrical workshop is housed in the extension building. The department has 14 laboratories with ultra modern equipments such as Digital Signal Processing, Microprocessor, Communications, Bio-medical, Electrical Motors and Drives and Instrumentation. These laboratories have testing facilities such as high voltage testing of induction motors, transformers, insulation resistance of compounds, impulse testing up to 500KV and power frequency testing as per I.S. norms.

* Civil and Environmental Engineering Department

The Civil and Environmental Engineering department at VJTI is situated in the extension of the main building on the first floor. The department has facilities in Environmental Engineering, Air-Pollution and Noise Pollution, Bio-assay, Transportation and Highway Engineering, Land Survey, Geology and Plumbing. All the laboratories are equipped with modern equipment and testing facilities. The department has started a post-graduate course in Construction Management in addition to the postgraduate course.

* Production Engineering Department

The office, staff-rooms and class-rooms are on the second floor of the Mechanical Engineering block at VJTI. The laboratories are on the ground and the mezzanine floors. The department (earlier named as Industrial Engineering Department) was set-up in 1959. Four year degree course in Production Engineering was started in 1973. The department has four well-equipped laboratories viz. Process laboratory, Metrology laboratory, Work-study laboratory and Computer laboratory.

* Computer Technology Department

The department situated at the Southern wing mainly on the first floor at VJTI was formed in 1985. The computer center was established in 1976 in collaboration with the National Centre for Software Development and Computing Techniques located in the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. It is housed near the Institute's quadrangle. A course in Computer Applications was started in 1984, Master’s course in 1985 and a Bachelor’s course in 1986. The computer center has a facility with over 150 PCs and workstations for software development in several areas.

* Textile Manufactures Department

The Textile Manufactures Department at VJTI is housed in a large north-light steel trusted roof building. The textile department is one of the two departments started at VJTI when it was first established in 1887. The department is spacious and has modern spinning, weaving and non-woven machinery in its workshops and modern testing equipments in its laboratories. The department has carried out a number of Industrial consultancy projects including geo-textile project for paved and unpaved roads, sponsored by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.

Indian Navy -- Cadet Entry Scheme for BTech 2009.

Indian Navy invites applications from unmarried male candidates (fulfilling the conditions regarding nationality as laid down by the Govt of India) to join the prestigious Naval Accademy, Ezhimala, Kerala under 10+2 (Technical) Cadet Entry Scheme.

Selected candidates will be inducted as Cadets for four-year BTech course in Electronics & Communication and Mechanical Engineering at the Naval Academy, Ezhimala Kerala. During the course cadets will be allotted Engineering or Electrical branch. On completion of the course, BTech Degree will be awarded by Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU).

Few cadets after first term may be nominated for BTech in Naval Architecture from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). They will have to appear for Common Admission Test of CUSAT. The successful candidates after first term will undergo four years BTech in Naval Architecture and Ship Building at CUSAT. Thereafter, the cadets will be deputed for a six-months course in warship design at Visakhapatnam, followed by 18 months Post Graduate Diploma in Naval Architecture (DIIT-NC) at IIT Delhi.

The entire cost of training, including books and reading material, will be borne by the Indian Navy. The cadets will also be provided with free clothing and messing.

Eligibility
Age: 16 to 19 years (ie born between January 2, 1991 & July 1, 1993. (both dates inclusive).

Educational Qualification: Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 Pattern) or its equivalent from University/Board with at least 70 per cent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) and at least 50 per cent marks in English (either in Class X or Class XII).

Physical Standards

(a) Height and Weight: Minimum height - 157 cms with correlated weight as per age.
(b) Eye Sight: The minimum acceptable vision standard for distant vision 6/12, 6/12 correctable to 6/6, 6/6 with glasses. Should not be colour /night blind.

Nokia’s N97, a new smartphone that is capable of capturing “DVD-quality” video. The Nokia N97’s 5-megapixel camera can capture 640-by-480 video at 30 frames per second. A dedicated button on the side of the phone activates the camera, so you don’t have to dig through menus to find it. And the N97 has a nice, big 3.5-inch touchscreen, which allows you to really see the video as you’re capturing it. It makes the 2-inch screen on the Kodak Zx1 look miniscule.

Controls for starting, stopping, pausing and zooming the video run along the sides of the N97’s screen, and are nicely spaced so as not to look too crowded. The touchscreen is responsive, so the controls are easy to use. Videos looked great on the N97’s screen, and even looked equally good when I transferred them to my computer via USB. There is a noticeable degradation in quality when using the camera’s digital zoom. Also the zoom mechanism a bit hard to use; the on-screen slider is small, and it jumped from one extreme to the other, rather than letting it zoom in subtly. Also the N97 seemed to have difficulty picking up audio. When playing back clips on the phone itself, the sound was dim, and much of the audio seemed almost nonexistent. The Nokia N97 is a pretty slick phone, but it’s expensive.

Sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan passed away in San Francisco in the US after a prolonged kidney ailment . 88-year-old Ustad Ali Akbar Khan died at his music centre at 10 am IST.,

The Sarod maestro, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan is survived by wife Mary, three sons and daughter. Pal, a family friend of the sarod maestro, said that he was informed about the death of Khan by the Ustad's family in San Francisco. Khan's secretary in Kolkata Ashish Roy said the maestro, who was on dialysis, had been ailing for over four years and his condition had deteriorated in the last four months.

A recipient of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan was a colossus in the world of Indian classical music for the last five decades. One of the most accomplished of Indian musicians in the Classical tradition, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan has been designated a 'Living National Treasure' in India - not to mention the fact that he is the object of much admiration in the rest of the world for his absolute mastery of the 25-stringed sarod.

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (April 14, 1922 - June 18, 2009) was a master of the sarod. His performances worldwide have established the modern sarod idiom and contributed to greater awareness of Indian classical music. Ali Akbar Khan passed away in San Rafael, California, on 18 June, 2009. One of the most accomplished of Indian musicians in the Classical tradition, Ali Akbar Khan has been designated a 'Living National Treasure' in India for his mastery of the 25-stringed sarod.

Ali Akbar Khan was born in the village of Shibpur, Comilla, in present-day Bangladesh (then East Bengal), to Baba Allauddin Khan and Madina Begum. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan began his studies in vocal and instrumental music at very early age under his father.

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan also studied drums from his uncle, Fakir Aftabuddin. His father, Allauddin Khan trained Ustad Ali Akbar Khan on several instruments, but decided finally that he must concentrate on the sarod. After years of rigorous training Ustad Ali Akbar Khan gave his debut performance in his mid-teens. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan became the court musician of the royal family of Jodhpur at the age of 22.

Ali Akbar Khan performed all over India to great applause and rave critical acclaim, and also traveled the world extensively in the West. In 1956, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan founded the Ali Akbar College of Music in Calcutta, with the mission to teach and spread Indian classical music. Two years later, he founded another school of the same name in Berkeley, California; it moved to its present location in San Rafael, California in 1968. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan has been based in the United States since the foundation of the San Rafael school, although he tours extensively. However, ill health in recent times has curtailed this. In 1985 he founded another branch of the Ali Akbar College of Music in Basel, Switzerland.

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan was a past master at outlining a melody with great economy of stroke, which stood him in good stead in his short 78 rpm records in the middle of the last century. His long concert performances progress from the meditative to the exhilarating (gat, jhala) in a highly structured build-up in the Senia beenkar style. He is also a fine exponent of "sawal-jawab", a dialogue between two instruments (usually one melodic and one percussion). Of late, ill health has reduced the frequency of his concerts and affected his physical dexterity on his instrument.

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan has participated in a number of classic jugalbandi pairings, most notably with Ravi Shankar, the late Nikhil Banerjee and the violinist L. Subramaniam. A few recordings of some spectacular duets with Vilayat Khan also exist. He has also collaborated with many well-known Western musicians.

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1989, one of the highest civilian awards in India, as well as a plethora of other awards and honours. In 1997, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan received the National Endowment for the Arts' prestigious National Heritage Fellowship, the United States' highest honour in the traditional arts. This followed a MacArthur Genius Grant in 1991. Khan has also received several Grammy nominations.

Late last month a Mumbai tabloid reported that Katrina's boyfriend, Salman Khan, threw her belongings out of his ground floor home in Galaxy Apartments, Bandra West, in a fit of rage after finding texts from John Abraham, her New York co-star, on her cell phone.

Katrina denied the report and claimed that she had not been in touch with John over the phone as was being alleged. However, the tabloid stuck to its story.

Katrina now acknowledges having been in contact with John.

"It was a mistake and sometimes mistakes can happen. But this particular issue was blown out of proportion. It was like this Chinese whisper, which went on and on."

Public transport systems in Mumbai include the Mumbai Suburban Railway, BEST buses, taxis, auto rickshaws, ferries, and aeroplanes. Black and yellow-metered, taxis traverse most of the metropolis. Auto rickshaws operate only in the suburban areas of Mumbai. Taxis and rickshaws which run on Compressed Natural Gas are the most common form of hired transport.

Mumbai is served by National Highway 3, National Highway 4 and National Highway 8 of the Indian National Highways system. Mumbai-Pune Expressway was the first expressway ever built in India, while Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway is under construction.

Mumbai is the headquarters of two railway zones: the Central Railway (CR) headquartered at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and the Western Railway (WR) headquartered near Churchgate. The backbone of the city's transport, the Mumbai Suburban Railway, consists of three separate networks running the length of the city, in a north-south direction.

The BEST runs a total of 4,037 buses, ferrying 4.5 million passengers daily over 340 routes. Its fleet consists of single-decker, double-decker, vestibule, low-floor, disabled-friendly, air-conditioned and the Euro III compliant Compressed Natural Gas powered buses. MSRTC buses provide intercity transport and connect Mumbai with other major cities of Maharashtra and India. The Mumbai Darshan is a tourist bus service which explores numerous tourist attractions in Mumbai. BRTS lanes have been planned throughout Mumbai, with buses running on seven routes as of March 2009.

With its unique topography, Mumbai has one of the best natural harbours in the world, handling around 60% of the country's passenger traffic, and much of India's cargo. It is also an important base for the Indian Navy, and the headquarters of the Western Naval Command is located here. Ferries from Ferry Wharf allow access to islands and beaches in the area.

Fiat Punto Launched June 17, 2009

Italian car major Fiat on Wednesday launched its much-awaited premium small car Grande Punto in both petrol and diesel variants in the Indian market, priced between Rs 3.99 lakh (Rs 399,000) and Rs 6.11 lakh (Rs 611,000), ex-showroom, Delhi.

"The launch of Grande Punto marks a new milestone for Fiat in India as we bring the quintessentially Italian designs to Indian shores," Fiat India Automobiles Ltd (FIAL) chief executive officer Rajeev Kapoor said in New Delhi

The company believes that the small-car segment is under-tapped and customers are increasingly looking forward to international brands on Indian roads, he added.

Grande Punto, which was first launched in the European market in 2005, would be rolled out from the company's plant at Ranjangaon in Maharashtra in four variants each in both petrol (1.2 litre an 1.4 litre) and diesel modes (1.3 litre).

The petrol variants would cost Rs 3.99-5.61 lakh (Rs 399,000-561,000), while the diesel cars would be offered at Rs 4.85-6.11 lakh (Rs 485,000-611,000).

FIAL, a 50:50 joint venture between Italy-based Fiat SpA and domestic auto major Tata Motors [Get Quote], plans to position the car in the premium hatchback segment along with Maruti Suzuki's Ritz, Hyundai's i20, Skoda's Fabia and Honda Siel's Jazz.

The company said Grande Punto would be retailed through over 100 Tata-Fiat dealers network across the country.

The company's Ranjangaon facility has a production capacity of 200,000 cars and 300,000 engines per annum. It produces Palio Stile and Linea from the plant.

Fiat India is gearing up for the array of new car launches in India and will convert its entire 65-dealer network in India on the lines of its global novelty stores.

All its major stores will bear Fiat’s signature ‘red and white’ layout and landscape. The first signature store has already started operating in Bangalore from April while two more signature stores will come up at Delhi and Faridabad shortly.

Bipasha Basu was born in New Delhi, India, to a Bengali family. Bipasha Basu is the second of three daughters to her parents, the elder being Bidisha, and the younger—Vijayeta. Although she was born in New Delhi, her family later moved to Kolkata.

According to Bipasha Basu, she had come into modeling and acting quite by accident, because initially she had planned to study medicine. Basu studied science till the 12th standard at Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir and later took up commerce at The Bhawanipur Gujarati Education Society College, an undergraduate college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. In Kolkata, Bipasha Basu did modelling and rampshows partime. Although, as pointed above, she intended to become a doctor, her aversion for dissections made her opt for chartered accountancy. However, in 1996, Bipasha Basu met well-known model Mehr Jessia in Kolkata; the latter suggested that Basu take part in the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. Bipasha Basu eventually participated, and won the contest.

After winning the Ford Godrej Cinthol contest, Basu was flown to New York by the Ford Company, where Bipasha Basu had a successful modelling career at the age of 17.

Bipasha Basu made her film debut in Abbas Mustan's Ajnabee, with Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor. Bipasha Basu played a married woman who goes all out to woo her husband’s married friend, and eventually won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for her performance.

In 2002, Bipasha Basu starred in Telugu movie Takkari Donga opposite Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu and Vikram Bhatt's thriller Raaz. Raaz was a big commercial success and surfaced as the biggest hit of that year. For her performance in the film, she received her first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare. One review in The Tribune noted, "...it is Bipasha Basu who steals the show with her fine performance." Bipasha Basu appeared as Sonia Khanna in the 2003 hit movie Jism alongside current boyfriend John Abraham. The movie earned her a Filmfare Best Villain Award nomination.

Besides acting, Bips - Bipasha Basu, as she is fondly called, did the famous video "Tu" for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat back in her early days before she became an actress. Bipasha Basu also made a guest appearance in Jay Sean's music video Stolen.

In 2006, Bipasha Basu won popular acclaim for her performance in an Item number during the song Beedi in the film Omkara. The song was a national hit, and Bipasha Basu's picturisation was appreciated.

In 2008 Bipasha Basu starred in Race, her second collaboration with duo Abbas Mustan, with whom she debuted in Bollywood. Co-starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, the film performed well at the box office, and Basu's performance was appreciated by critics. Taran Adarsh of indiaFM described her performance as "her best work so far. She’s superb". Bipasha Basu also received good reviews for her role in Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor. She completed the year by appearing in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in the song Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte.

In 2009 Bipasha signed her first Hollywood venture Chaimera alongside Billy Zane.

Raima Sen is the daughter of Moon Moon Sen and the grand-daughter of legendary actress Suchitra Sen. Raima Sen's sister, Riya Sen, is also in the Bollywood industry. Their father is Bharat Dev Varma, scion of the erstwhile royal family of Tripura state.

Raima Sen's paternal grandmother Ila Devi, was the princess of Cooch Behar (in Bengal), whose younger sister Gayatri Devi is the Maharani of Jaipur.

Raima Sen made her debut in the film Godmother, which was a critically acclaimed success, but her minor role may have been overlooked in favour of the protagonist, played by Shabana Azmi. Raima Sen then starred in the film Daman playing Raveena Tandon's daughter, where her small performance was appreciated.

Her breakthrough role came when Raima Sen starred in the Rituparno Ghosh's film Chokher Bali. She won much praise for her role as the simple, submissive Ashalata. After a few more average movies Raima Sen had a critically acclaimed hit in 2005 with Parineeta, where she played the playmate of the film's heroine, essayed by the debutante Vidya Balan. Since then Raima Sen has had two more hits with the action thriller Dus and the Bengali film Antar Mahal (where she had a very small role). Most recently,Raima Sen appeared in the film The Bong Connection (co-starring Shayan Munshi).

Raima Sen has signed her first Tamil film and she is expected to do more south Indian films. Raima Sen has yet, however, to play the leading role in any hit movie.
