The Programme of Action (PoA), 1992 under the National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986 envisaged conduct of a common entrance examination on all India basis for admission to professional and technical programs in the country. This takes care of varying admission standards in these programs and helps in maintenance of professional standards. This also solves problems of overlaps and reduces physical, mental and financial burden on students and their parents due to multiplicity of entrance examinations.
However admission of foreign nationals, persons of Indian origin and Indian nationals living abroad, in centrally funded institutions, i.e National Institute of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Allahabad, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (ABVIITM), Gwalior, National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology (NIFFT), Ranchi, North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Itanagar and Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology(SLIET), Longowal shall be done as per Ministry of Human Resource Development's letter No.F.21-2/2001-TS.I dated 14.05.2001.
